  • Hallelujah! The Great Storm is Over!

No, it wasn't a storm where people were struggling with relationships, where things were all going wrong, but, it was a storm of work to be done, of so much to keep track of that my brain felt dizzy! But, it was also a beautiful day, a wonderful time to reconnect with family and friends.
I speak of course of Marina and Landon's wedding!  What a time, flowers that didn't want to cooperate (but enough of them did!) Family and friends being helpful and encouraging above and beyond the call of duty!
When I think of a  week ago, I remember Josh picking up cheesecake, and moving innumerable tables. Evan, treating multiple tablecloths so they wouldn't stain. Nicole, dippping strawberries. Michelle, laboring over corsages(they were beautiful!)
And on the wedding day: Timmy, singing "Sunrise, Sunset" so beautifully, Steve, hissing(nicely) "you the woman!" as he escorted me up the aisle. Marina, her face glowing as she came to meet Landon. Landon, his face lighting up like a sunrise as he saw Marina.
And of course, Clean up, Daniel, asking me, "So how much will you pay Emily and I if we elope?" Ha! Your wedding I don't have to plan!"
Afterwards, time with family, visiting, sitting and relaxing!
Yes, it was good, but I am glad that I don't have to do it again real soon!

    Five Days and Counting...

When I sat down last week to write a blog entry, I was so utterly weary, my mind was blank. Call it a remnant of wedding shopping, Marina and I had just finished an exhausting shopping trip, full of frustration until we hit the wonderful shop known as Goodwill where we loaded up with exactly what we were looking for at a fraction of the cost of those "other places". Thank God that people like to get rid of nice things! But, the experience made for a great deal of weariness!

Weddings are the foremost topic of conversation and activity here at our house right now. We have finished the graduations, Yea!! Marina graduated with honors and an associates degree from Rosedale Bible College on Saturday, and Hans, while he plans to return there next year, also graduated with a one year certificate. With the graduation came the first round of guests, also disguised as helpers in the journey towards the wedding day. The noble relative,"Michelle" and the honored bridesmaid, "Nicole" along with the sweet cousin, "Melinda" are here for the week, helping out with what needs to be done.

The final lists are being made, the final stitches are being put in, the last shopping trips are being planned... and Saturday is the big day!

The excitement is tinged with a tug of dismay for me. My daughter is moving out! I know it's an inevitable consequence of marriage, but one that can easily get lost in the hustle and excitement of planning a wedding. Perhaps that's one reason why we work so hard to make it a special day for our children. If we work hard enough, our primary feeling at the end of the day will be relief, rather than the little twinges of regret and dismay that fight their way through! That doesn't mean that Marina and Landon don't have my blessing, they do! They also have my dismay. When you are young and you look ahead, you can say with never a sigh, "Well, I wouldn't want my kids to live with me all their lives." But, when the time of departure comes, it's still difficult to see them go, even if you don't want them to live with you the rest of your life(which I really don't! )

At the graduation lunch on Saturday, Patrick was wandering around seeing the sights and exploring the grounds when he encountered a hitherto-yet-unnoticed sight, there was a very pretty little girl standing there! Well, his response was the one of any normal young man when seeing a pretty girl. He gave her a very nice hug! (She looked a little surprised, but didn't complain!)

PRAYER FOR THE MORNING: "Almighty God, Merciful Father, who created and completed all things, on this day when the work of our calling begins anew, we implore You to create its beginning, direct its continuance, and bless its end, that our doings may be preserved from sin, our life sanctified, and our work this day be well pleasing to You; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen-(from Treasury of Daily Prayer)

A Van of Character, among other things!

We went to Indiana this weekend.  We were transporting a bed along with the things from Marina's shower to the apartment that she and Landon will live in after they are married.  We don't have a vehicle large enough to carry a mattress, so we borrowed a van that is blue and full of great age and character.  It has 2 seats, one for the driver, and one for Patrick, since he needs to be in a car seat.  Marina and I hunkered down on the mattress on the way out.  There were frequent and loud creaks and groanings from the rear of the van, the occasional belt squeal from the front, but we plugged on!  We met up with fog on the way out, and arrived at our destination at an hour when all reasonable people are sleeping, but we made it!
We spent Saturday moving the bed into the apartment and fetching the (in)famous orange chairs from Landon's dorm room.  I was glad to see the apartment so I will be able to visualize Marina there in a few months (or weeks!)
Patrick definetely enjoyed sitting in front!  He happily hollered, "Shotgun!" when it was time to leave, clambered up into the seat and was quite delighted with the scenery after his nap.
I discovered that blankets on the floor are not too bad for a pad to sit on but I don't think that I would like to make a trip too much longer than 5 hours.
RBC was the site of Salt and Light's program this evening, we were really hoping to make it by seven and might have, but, alas, Patrick had clambered in to the great blue van without proper supervision and had gleefully turned on the windsheild wipers, and (we aren't sure, but we think) turned on the key to the halfway point.  Well, battery stamina doesn't seem to be a strong point of the van, and when John turned the key, there was a very quiet little groan, and then nothing.  So, we needed a jump and we needed to clean the battery terminals, and I'm not sure what else, but it delayed our leave taking by about half an hour.
We got to RBC for the last half of the program, it was so good to see Hans with the rest of the group and it was a good program!
Now we are home, and I have been regaled with stories, and chocolate from my dear stay at home daughters...and I am starting to think about what all needs to be done this week for the soon up coming wedding, (lots!)

The stress level at our house right now is so high we must glow neon green as the "stress-o-meter" man goes by!  There are wedding invitations to finish up, there are graduation invitations to finish up, there are wedding plans to complete, there is graduation shopping that needs to be done...There are "little people" in the house who are neither graduating or getting married who would like a bit of attention now and then for the events that are filling their worlds!
And pictures! What a motif the taking and getting of pictures has been through this week. I love my kids, but, I'm getting a little weary, "What do you think about this one...or maybe this one...?" And, "Boy, I look like a crazed maniac on this one!" (She was right, she did!)
On Monday morning Daniel left for the Grand Adventure!  As he treks through Europe with his buddies in their black VW Passat, we at home alternate between envy and missing him.
Last night, John, Alisha and I made our way to MVNU, to see Timmy and his significant other in a rollicking production of the Pirates of Penzance. Tim was simply superb as the bumbling, hapless sargeant attempting to arrest the pirates, but just a little too scared of those shiny sharp swords to be effective.
I was given wise advice about all this wedding planning, "Try and enjoy the process!" So, with a deep inhalation, followed by an equally hearty exhalation, I shall try to enjoy the process and not just eagerly await the final result.
INTERESTING SIGN OF THE WEEK: "Cat Starter Here" at our local WalMart.  I wondered, how do you start a cat? Do you just add water? Do you need to bake it in the oven? Alas, I was too busy to go over and read the fine print!

    Cars and Kids!

I have had only one basic qualification for cars through the years...the car needs to start when I turn the key, and run reliably while I drive it..(that might actually be two qualifications!)
We are in the middle of a car shortage at the moment, our van is down for now, and our better car is also not up to speed, so we are using John's work car and the Abomination known as Hans' car...I unfortunately end up driving that one the majority of the time, and anyone who knows my life, realizes that I spend quite a lot of time in the car.  My new qualification for a car, it needs to be quiet enough as you drive that conversation is a possibility!  You need to be able to hear the music on the CD player without being one of those infamous cars that vibrate the houses nearby as you pass...ah , for the days of peace, may they return soon!
In other news, life continues to thunder past with breath taking speed.  I have children who are getting married! Yes, children! Marina in May, and Daniel at some yet undetermined date after he returns from his European jaunt.  I did think that a certain measure, or at least a feeling of maturity, would accompany this time of my life. After all, my parents were old, and wise, when I was old enough to get married.  Alas, I find myself feeling quite young, and not very full of answers, and very aware of my own failings in so many matters!
QUOTE OF THE DAY: (or week, as the case may be!) "No wah!" -Patrick's favorite words, the meaning of which we are all very uncertain.  He uses it early in the morning when he wakes up"No wah"
He uses it during the day, "Mommy, no wah." He uses it at bed time when he is weary and grumpy, "NO WAH!"  Any clues as to the meaning would be welcomed!
